Exploring the more than 35 self portraits of Vincent van Gogh, Buttercloth’s founder Danh Tran captures the spirit of Van Gogh’s innovation and his love for the craft. Short of money and struggling to find models in Paris, Vincent was determined to hone his skills as a figure painter, so he found a simple solution in painting himself using a mirror. In another letter to his brother Theo, Vincent van Gogh said, "I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model." (Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo, 16 September 1888)

Through his choices of color and backgrounds, each Van Gogh self-portrait reflects the continual development of Vincent's artistic style. Early dark backgrounds gradually become lighter and more colorful. His brush strokes become more heavily textured with a raised surface, this “impasto” technique ultimately helping to distinguish some of his best works.

Like Van Gogh, Danh Tran loves his own art form, and has a passion for helping men look and feel good. His regard for originality, and the determination necessary to accomplish it, is evident in the revolutionary soft fabric he invented and named “Buttercloth.” Not only the world’s most comfortable shirts, Danh’s addition of subtle details and distinctive patterns further define and make Buttercloth garments truly exceptional.

Through Van Gogh’s paintings and letters, the Limited-Edition collection allows all to own an exquisite Buttercloth garment while experiencing the mastery and mystery that is Vincent van Gogh.

Buttercloth, “The World’s Most Comfortable Shirt,” is a premium, men’s lifestyle brand that is reinventing essentials through innovation, style and outstanding comfort. Following a successful launch of their revolutionary fabric in 2017, the founder, Danh Tran, was invited to appear on ABC’s Shark Tank, where he made a $250,000 deal with investor Robert Herjavec. Together Danh and Robert are building a global brand that promises to make guys “look like a Friday night, but feel like a Sunday morning.”
