ALEXANDER MCQUEEN S/S 21

Sarah Burton’s spring summer collection for Alexander McQueen’s 2021 menswear was interspersed with bursts of blues and hot pinks. The bright pink hue made the bomber jacket look especially buttery, less so were the black tie bomber jackets that while an interesting juxtaposition, I am left wondering who exactly will be wearing them. I am tempted to repeat myself as well with the cumberband pieces but the cumberband seems to be a developing trend in designers collections, as well as the fact that the suit featuring a deconstructed cumberband has been living rent free in my mind since I saw it. The expertly tailored (and I would expect nothing else but excellent tailoring from McQueen) leather coat seems a solid bet that shows off the brand’s DNA while transitioning from runway to a treasured piece in someone’s wardrobe that will hopefully see many nights out in 2021. There was also a metallic grey cut out suit that calls back to a similar look from the 2020 spring womenswear down to the color that is adventurous without alienating anyone at the office when they open back up, but I’m also imagining the opportunities for a pop of color underneath (perhaps a hot pink in keeping with the collections color palette) or a flash of skin as is pictured in the lookbook. And easier, and safe bet in the time of quarantines, are the knitwear looks. I’m in love with the sweaters that seem to have a wave overtaking the original piece. While the more relaxed looks might read work from home, for the more optimistic (me), I imagine they’d be comfortable and stylish travel pieces. The last look was monochromatic cream with a print made up of Burton and her team’s sketches for past collections which have kept the brand’s expert and envelope-pushing tailoring alive. The tailoring on the look--on point.
