BALENCIAGA S/S 21
While many designers sought alternatives to hosting runway shows this year, from films to lookbooks, Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, turned to video games, creating a video game app in which to debut the new fall 2021 collection. It might seem like a gimmick idea, hoping to stand out and catch the interest of the twitch and discord demographic, but maybe this is where the future is headed: online avatars customers can use to online shop. Either way, this is a standard Gvasalia for Balenciaga collection full of extra puffy puffer jackets, oversized clothes, and branded shirts. There’s a few nods to past pieces of the brand from the motorcycle bag to the gold cyborg boot this time closer to a silver robot knight, as well as some humor with the carryout bags an app delivery driver might use. It’s a collection Gvasalia fans will be pleased with, but nothing revolutionary for his time at Balenciaga.
