KEENKEE FALL/WINTER 21

With Kee Kim’s graphic design background, it becomes readily apparent why his latest collection fills me with the same zen that staring at Windows XP screensavers gave me during computerlab in school way back when. There’s an attention to detail in the design that translates to beautiful pieces that are foundational for any closet. The use of color from deadstock textiles, often in gradients that seem to change as the fabric moves, differentiates this brand from all the companies popping up trying to do “elevated basics” in every color of the rainbow. The crushed velvet pants would be great for WFH and could easily be dressed up for a night out as the world comes out of the Covid-19 pandemic. Kee Kim has created a collection of solid basics that are elevated by good design combined with his utilization of textures (fuzzy flower print coats and nylon windbreakers) and color. Anyone of these pieces could be worn for years and still look just as great ten years down the line as it does today. And isn’t that the reason why people want what has become termed “elevated basics” which used to be classics? No one wants a boring wardrobe staple that is no pleasure to wear. Even a simple plain white t-shirt needs to feel good when worn. Who wouldn’t feel great walking out the door in a leather trench that’s as easy to wear as a windbreaker. . .or a gradient turtleneck?
