We caught up with the young actress to talk about her new project, her inspirations and aspirations.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Momona, I’m 15 and Japanese Canadian. I love baking, dancing, and acting of course!
You started professional dancing at a young age, how did you transition from dancing to acting? who or what inspired you to pursue acting?
Well, my introduction to the film industry was actually through dance. I started auditioning for background dance roles, and truly thought that’s where my career would eventually end up. With that being said, I was quickly roped into trying acting auditions that I quickly found interest in. At the time everything was moving so quickly and unexpectedly that I didn’t even realize the shift between the two. I’m extremely grateful to have had all my dance experiences as it has led me to where I am today!
You act, you dance, and you bake; Can you rank your favorite from 1-3 (1 being top favorite) and why?
This is a hard one! I would rank baking at 3rd, dance at 2nd, and acting at 1st. They all have such distinct qualities and meanings to me, so the ranking is bound to change depending on the day. As of now, this is how I’m feeling :)
Who did you look up to growing up? And Why?
My parents! I think they are the coolest people ever, and I have so much appreciation towards both of them. Hearing their stories about coming to a new country, and starting a fresh life takes so much courage that I only admire. I love them both, and I’m so thankful to have such a supportive family.
You are starring in Paramount+ action feature film “Secret Headquarters” opposite Owen Wilson and Michael Peña; can you tell us more about it and what role did you play in the feature?
Secret Headquarters to me is a movie that everyone in the family can enjoy. It has bits of action, comedy, and adventure, with an interesting plotline and fun new technology. Maya is the name of the character I portray in “Secret Headquarters.” She was first described to me as a “military brat” who is used to moving around the globe, never staying in the same place for long. Although she can come off as a bit tough and closed off, we learn that her behavior has adapted that way due to her lifestyle and past exchanges. Over the course of the movie, it’s fun to see Maya open up to people who she can truly consider her friends.
How do you most closely relate, if at all, to your character?
I think Maya really cares about those who are close to her and is protective of those individuals. Although I differ quite a bit from Maya’s personality, I would say that’s where we are similar. I tend to be protective of those I care about and stay loyal in all my relationships.
What is it like to work with the iconic and ever-so-funny Owen Wilson and Michael Peña in Paramount+ action feature film “Secret Headquarters”?
The entire experience was a dream! Working with some of the most experienced and well-respected actors in the industry was such a huge learning opportunity for me. They were both so comfortable in all of the settings, and always communicated their thoughts with the rest of the cast. I think the best part was watching them play and improvise in scenes, as the best moments were always found there. Off set, they were both so incredibly kind, and always took the time out of their day to catch up with all of us!
If you were granted any superhero power, what power would you want and why?
Maybe the ability to fly or to teleport? I feel like that would be cool! I love traveling, so teleportation would be super useful in those times, but flying also sounds like it would be so fun and freeing!
If you are not pursuing acting, what would you want to do and why?
As a kid, my dream was to open a little bakery or cafe, so maybe that! If not, I would definitely try to find work within the film industry, because I just love the environment so much. I would even consider doing costume design!
Are you involve in any philanthropic or charity causes?
Always! I think it’s so important to use our voices and resources for good. I’ve gotten chances to assist and be a part of many incredible causes, and I try to encourage my following to do the same.
What can we look forward to next for you?
My new Voice Over project with Netflix will be coming out soon! It was my first experience in the voice over world, so I learned a lot from that. I can’t wait to share more about all my upcoming projects! GR8T
